Thrust on SEZs to revive exports

The Commerce Ministry has sought incentives for special economic zones (SEZs) in the budget. SEZs possess the potential to revive exports, which have contracted for the twelfth month running. The Global demand is not so robust, though the devaluation of the Chinese currency Yuan. Incentivising manufacturing in SEZs would help in the ‘Make in India’ initiative and also boost exports. Following are the proposals made by the Commerce Ministry. • Exemption of 20% minimum alternate tax on SEZs • Incentives to investors to make use of land and other facilities lying idle • Removal or cut in the dividend distribution tax • SEZ units to be given permission to sell in domestic market by paying same duty applicable to imports from FTA partner countries
