Theme based townships soon to become reality

With the floating of tender for Uttam city at Baruipur recently, the West Bengal Government has set the stage for theme based township in Kolkata. Five more such townships are at the planning stage. Spread over an area of 86 acres, Uttam City will be developed on the theme of wellness and health and will focus particularly on senior citizens. The e-auction to select the developer is scheduled to be held on 30 November. The bidders are expected to come up with a masterplan and detailed project report that would include both non-residential and commercial development areas. Besides, the government has also identified 447 acres for the six theme townships at Dabgram, Bolpur, Kalyani, Baruipur, Asansol and Dumurjola. According to the officials involved the developers will get quick approvals and clearances at the state level. Focussing on the economically weaker section plans are also in place to reserve 25% residential units for them. Another 25% of the space will be reserved for the development of theme. In the remaining areas builders will be free to carry on commercial expansion. A few US based companies have also shown interest in the township projects. Besides, state delegation has also met representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham India). The latter Commerce and industries minister Amit Mitra had said that firms such as HP, E&Y and Cisco have shown interest in participating in the development of the ‘themed cities’ in e-learning, e-health, telemedicine and so on. According to the reports three international companies including a real estate developer conglomerate have shown interest in the ‘city of analytics’ at Kalyani. This township will come up on 52.5 acres at an estimated investment of Rs 3,600 crore Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has been facilitating the theme city project of the government. Speaking to the media in Kolkata BCCI President hoped that the final bid will be awarded by January 15, 2016.
